OPEN CALL: 100 Book Award

Some books are not meant to be produced in the hundreds. Working in smaller editions allows room for artistic exploration, experimentation, and a certain freedom from economic risk.

With this in mind, we are announcing an open call for one or two projects to be published next spring in a limited print run of 100 copies.

The open call is open to artists working primarily with photography, and all photographic styles are welcome. Other media, such as drawing and writing, may be incorporated, but photography must remain the primary medium. AI-generated work will not be accepted.

Your book will be
- designed by Janne Riikonen
- produced in an edition of 100 copies
- assigned an ISBN
- included in the Kult Books catalogue
- sold at book fairs, online and through bookshops

The artist’s responsibilities in the process are
- attending meetings to oversee the design process
- retouching the selected photographs and delivering them in print-ready quality
- delivering a book description and other relevant texts

Submit via email to hello@kultbooks.com by sending
- 80–300 low-resolution JPGs (about 2000px long edge) via download link ((preferred))
OR
- a dummy / PDF ((note that we reserve the right to make changes to the existing dummy))

Please include a written description of the work to your submission and mention open call in the email subject field. You may submit as many projects as you want, but please send them in separate emails to avoid mixing them up.

Fees
No fees, no costs. That’s right — the whole process won’t cost you a penny.
You get your book designed for free, printed for free, promoted for free. You will receive 3 copies of the book, as well as the right to purchase up to 20 additional copies at 60% off the retail price. You may sell these copies in any way you wish to generate income for yourself. We find this method preferable to calculating royalty percentages.

The selected artist(s) will be contacted around mid-June for a video call to discuss the project, timeline, and terms. Please note that if you are planning to make a 300-page large-format hardcover book, this open call is probably not for you.
