NEW BOOK: The Perfect Crime by Jan A. Staiger and Malte Uchtmann
Very excited to announce the next Kult Books release, by German photographers Malte Uchtmann and Jan A. Staiger - The Perfect Crime: Concerning the Murder of Reality. The work investigates the effect of crime series on our perception and behaviour through several photographic techniques and approaches. The silkscreened thermachromic cover reacts to warmth of the readers hands, leaving temporary light marks that fade away as the material cools down. The Special Edition contains the book in a slipcase, which is screen printed and uniquely handled with glow-in-the-dark UV ink by the artists Jan A. Staiger and Malte Uchtmann. During the day, the ink is charged if exposed to light, which consequently makes the slipcases glow during the night.
The book will be released at Plast in Leipzig on the 17th of April.

NEW BOOK: Notes for Our Legacy by Janne Riikonen
That’s right, I, Janne Riikonen haven’t retired from photography, and I’m finally publishing my second monograph Notes for Our Legacy. The work is a statement against the unsustainable culture of consumption by depicting billboards that are empty of advertisement. I also made a Special Edition of the book, which comes with a silk screened print and wrapped into a paper I have made out of advertisement I have removed from public spaces. I have photographed the work for seven years and I’m happy to finally have the book in my hands. It’s printed with risography on fully recycled papers, and comes in edition of 300 copies.

NEW BOOK: Pasaco, 1996 by Luis Corzo
Very excited to announce the second release of the fall 2023: Pasaco, 1996 by Luis Corzo. The book tells a frightening story of Luis being kidnapped as a child with his father by Guatemalan organised crime group “Los Pasaco”. I met Luis in Polycopies last year where he showed me the dummy of the book. Luis created this investigative photography project as he wanted closure to the traumatic events he lived though as a child. The book initiates conversations surrounding the story; those of violence, corruption, capital punishment, and criminal rehabilitation. Now, almost one year later, we have 96 page, hardcover book with a tipped in photograph in our hands.
The book will be released at Dashwood Books in New York on the 5th of October. Luis will be present to talk about the work and sign books. Don’t miss out!
And a special deal for customers in the US: Order your book online to get it signed by Luis plus a 5€ refund! (shipping will also be done by Luis.)

OUT NOW (NEW BOOK): Gravity by Aapo Huhta
The first drop of the fall 2023 is out now: A sensational book Gravity by Aapo Huhta. Gravity presents a collection of black and white studio portraits of human figures and shapes combined with imagery of mummified remains from late 16th-century Sicily. By photographing and rephotographing through transparent and reflective objects, Huhta transforms the figures into contorted human-like creatures. As Huhta’s two previous monographs Block (Kehrer 2015) and Omatandangole (Kehrer 2019), Gravity is designed by the artist and Heikki Kaski. The book consists of monotone and tritone printed paper stocks that are pamphlet bound into double folded, printed and foiled soft covers. The work is shown at Galleria Heino in Helsinki Finland until the 27th of August.

OUT NOW (NEW BOOK): El Retrato de tu Ausencia by Alejandro “Luperca” Morales
The third book of the year, El Retrato de tu Ausencia by the Mexican photographer Alejandro “Luperca” Morales is out now! During a period of six years Alejandro Morales collected more than 500 photographs depicting bodies published his local newspaper P.M. in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico. The time of extreme violence made Ciudad Juárez among the most violent cities in the world, marked by the large number of intentional homicides committed in its streets. The limits of what the press could publish were blurred as it was so common to find oneself in the middle of a shootout or come across an abandoned corpse. The book consists of the photographs from which Morales removed all the corpses by manually erasing them with a gum eraser.
I discovered the work in Arles in 2022 when the dummy was shortlisted for the dummy award. Alejandro’s work was so good that I could not get it out of my mind. So when I returned back to Stockholm, I wrote him and we started to collaborate to publish the book. The simple and very fitting design by Fernando Gallegos is perfected by lenticular photos on the covers, which show a body appearing and disappearing when looked from different angles. We were happy to get Los Sumergidos to be part of the team as a co-publisher, for the book to get more visibility in the Americas.

NEW BOOK: Battered by Harri Pälviranta
Very excited to announce the last drop of 2022 - book Battered by the Finnish photographer Harri Pälviranta. In the book Battered Pälviranta shows the real faces of street violence in Finland. In contrast to the stereotypic portrayals of male heroics and the worn-out attempts at shocking people, Pälviranta deals with the utmost banality inherent in violence.
The 64 page hardcover book comes in large format of 29,5 x 29 cm and features 32 photographs from Pälviranta’s iconic series. Battered was first exhibited in December 2007, and since then pictures from the series have been appeared in tens of exhibitions around the world. Currently 15 pictures from the Battered series are exhibited in the National Museum of Contemporary Art MNAC in Lisbon as part of a bigger solo show by Harri Pälviranta. Even though vastly exhibited, Battered has never been available as a book. This situation is now corrected.
The book will be released in Paris at Polycopies book fair on the 10th of November at 5 PM, Pälviranta will of course be present. If in Paris, please come by and celebrate with us!
Pre-orders are now open, Read more about the book here.

EXHIBITION: Norman Behrendt: Blueprint 2017-20 Collector’s Edition
Norman Behrendt is participating in a group show “No One Belongs Here More Than You” at the National Gallery in Prague part of the Fotograf Festival. Behrendt exhibits seven unique copies of the Collector’s Edition of his book Blueprint 2017-20.
‘Who does belong here? A seemingly simple question seems to be at the heart of much of the current cultural debates, policy-making and social measures. The question of belonging even becomes a threat for various people when they do not fit into the imaginary homogeneous vision of a nation that is advocated for by a growing number of proponents of the extreme right and populism. The central exhibition of the Fotograf Festival presents artistic strategies that recognise this attack on civil rights and liberties, understanding it as symptomatic of the shift from a democratic to an authoritarian political order.’
The exhibition opens on Thursday 22nd September and runs until the 8th of January 2023.

NEW BOOK: My Man Mitch by Ian Lewandowski
My Man Mitch is about Ian Lewandowski’s home state of Indiana, manhood, and finding and maintaining queer space. After moving to New York to pursue a degree and career as a fine artist, Lewandowski, raised in a working-class, conservative, Christian environment, started to analyze these origins through photographic imagery native to Indiana and his family. Simultaneously he was photographing fellow gay men in their New York City apartments. Lewandowski combines his own photography with appropriated material, primarily Indiana high school yearbook photographs, as a dialogue on community and belonging, and a way to elaborate and expand upon his relationship to manhood and gay identity.
My Man Mitch is the tenth book by Kult Books and the second monograph by Ian Lewandowski. The book is very meaningful to us in many ways. We have been working closely with Ian on this book since January 2021. The editing, the sequence as well as design was all done together – working with Ian has been very fruitful and rewarding.
The book is an 80 page softcover featuring 38 works by Ian and a text by Paul Legault. Inside the front and back cover, partly hidden under the flaps, is a collage of photographs of Ian’s family albums from speedway races. The book is offset printed on coated stock to get the deep tones that are very rich in Ian’s large format photographs.
The release is planned for late June in New York, stay tuned!
ps. A special edition of 20 copies is also in the making, planned release in early August!

NEW BOOK: Il Malocchio by Andrea Simonato
Thrilled to announce the next book by Kult Books, Il Malocchio by Italian photographer Andrea Simonato. In his debut book Simonato depicts the quiet villages of his home region of Vicenza in the Northern Italy as upon a curse of unluckiness called ‘il malocchio’ or ‘the evil eye’ . On his walks through sleeping villages and their empty buildings, dark woods and resting groves Simonato makes extraordinary findings in the seemingly common surroundings. The work echoes both longing and hope, creating a beautiful and poetic, yet mysterious ode to a place called home.
The perfect bound hard cover book comes in first edition of 250 copies. The book features 49 black and white photographs by Simonato and is printed with duotone offset technique. The book is now available to purchase with a pre-sale discount and is estimated to be released on the 4th of April.

MÈRE BOOK RELEASE AND EXHIBITION
Mère by Julie Scheurweghs will be released this Friday, September 3rd at the vernissage of her exhibition ‘Birth of a Mother’ in mu.ZEE in Belgium.
“What happens before, during and after delivery is dominated in the public domain by idealised bodies stripped of all juices, fat, pain and welts. On the one hand, there is the clinical approach that often runs counter to how mothers would act emotionally or instinctively, and on the other hand, a sexualised patriarchal view that only offers space for the woman as an object of sexual desire. Both ways of visualising femininity distort the reality. For ‘Birth of a Mother’ Julie Scheurweghs therefore explicitly opts for motherhood, without disguising or dramatising it, as a possible stage in a woman’s life in which transformation and strength lie.”
While the exhibition shows more broadly Scheurweghs’ work around the experience of giving birth and being in labour, the book Mère is more narrow and conceptual piece depicting her own experience of becoming a mother. The book can be browsed at the exhibition and will be available to purchase at the museum shop, selected bookstores and of via our website. All pre-orders will be shipped the following Monday. ‘Birth of a Mother’ will run until January 2022 in

NEW BOOK: Mère by Julie Scheurweghs
"There is a great power in giving birth, one of transformation, hope and new beginnings."
Very excited to announce the seventh Kult Books’ publication, Mère by Julie Scheurweghs. In her debut book Mère, we see the artist Julie Scheurweghs in different stages of labour. Scheurweghs' natural home birth took 16 hours, and while being by her side, the whole process was closely documented by her partner. Later Scheurweghs cropped the photographs to details that accurately matched her recollections from the day. The pure and bare design of the book highlights the skin-close and raw photographs that show the intensity of the experience.
The 148 page book features 142 black and white photographs in continuous sequence; no breaks are given - no breaks are given in labour either. First print run is 200 copies and the book can be bought from our website for a pre-order discount of 25€ until 3rd of September. Read more and look inside here.

The book is designed and edited by the artist Norman Behrendt and Janne Riikonen from Kult Books. The book is printed with two Pantone colours to match the tonalities of Behrendt’s original cyanotypes. Behrendt chose the cyanotype as his artistic method to reflect the invisible influence of the European Union on the United Kingdom. The idea for the book concept, creating fully blue book with coloured edges came quite early in the design process. The only colour detail, a yellow foiled star in the cover symbolising the United Kingdom, follows the graphic guide of the European emblem.
The 304 page book features 212 of Behrendt’s photographs from his two part work Blueprint. The first half of the project, Blueprint, 2017-18, was made while the artist lived in London for a year during the countdown to the United Kingdom’s departure from the European Union. The second half, Blueprint, 2019-20, was made after Behrendt’s return to Berlin. While the two bodies of work can each be exhibited as a large grid of 175 A3 cyanotypes (each grid approximately 3 x 8 metres) or as smaller selections, the book offers a non-chronological edit from the archive of images that make up the two parts of the project.

NEW BOOK: Blueprint 2017–20 by Norman Behrendt
Exciting news – The pre sale for our upcoming book Blueprint 2017–20 by German photographer Norman Behrendt is now open. Blueprint 2017–20 explores how the mass media has influenced political debates and democratic processes during the process of Brexit. Norman Behrendt's photographs of Brexit-related video material examine what sort of imagery is used to influence people by stirring up deep-seated attitudes around national pride, immigration and lack of control.
“I am interested in how the mass media contributed to a post-truth political environment. By photographing details of publicly accessible online video content, uploaded on various media channels including newspapers, magazines, Leave and Remain Youtube channels, documentaries and political debates in the UK and EU parliaments, I disassemble the visual layers into their individual parts and thereby scrutinize and recycle these pixelated, transient images. In my presentation I bring these different visual extracts together, rearrange them and thereby form a new narrative.”
- Norman Behrendt
The book features 212 photographs and an essay by Lucy Soutter and an appendix featuring crucial texts and speeches about Brexit and EU-UK relations. Blueprint 2017–20 is the fifth book by Kult Books and third book by Norman Behrendt. Look inside and order yours now with a special pre sale discount here.
